In Process -- April 2015

First Draft
“The Top of the Volcano”. Wound up with a 6000-word draft for a 3000-word planned story. Wrote an outline halfway through, think that helped.
“Spinnerette”. Short story, exercise in pastiche. It was planned to be 2000 words, but I wound up with 4000. Of course. Dean Wesley Smith would hate me. I think I went a couple of pages past the end.
“Before Breakfast”. Probably a working title, but anyway. I wrote 500 words and then realized I needed characters and interaction, and it turned out they were both women not men, which changes everything. Who knew!

Editing

“Wind/Water/Salt”. Chapters 28 to 34 edited. Also made some minor changes to earlier spots to make the later stuff make sense.
“Lucky Kate”. Typed up the middle that I rewrote a while ago, culled some bits out to make it make sense.

Connecting
Went to workshop day at ad astra. If I’d stayed longer I might have made some friends. I did three workshops. The first one was Getting out of the slushpile, and it was really good. Then was lunch, and then was Writing Diversity, which was also good but not all about me. This workshop made me like Leah Bobet more. She came across as very human. The third one was fixing your Story Gremlins, and I would have gotten more out of it if I hadn’t done three workshops, or even if there had been a break between 2 and 3 maybe.

So I learned a couple of things:
1.      I should build some empty space into my conventioning, rather than try to pack everything tightly together. Go to the con suite, chill, not have a plan. The best things happen when I don’t have a plan.
2.      My novel doesn’t suck, it just needs more editing down.

Knitting
“Ceremonial Armour” (Kaffe Fassett, knit from a photo). 26 rows to go on the body.
“St. Anthony’s Ribbon” (self-designed). Ignored.
Vinterlys (Norsk Strikkedesign). Second sleeve now 7 inches long, did a couple more inches on the body.
Rust Damask Jacket (Takle & Kolstadt). Finished two inches bottom ribbing in the car. Will work on this seriously when vinterlys is done.
I have too many projects right now. Two of them need to be done.

Best TW feedback ever

Over at the dayjob, SMEs are feverishly trying to get documents back to me all marked up, in preparation for the release that's supposed to happen the week I'm back from VP. Today's best comment: Unfortunately not true. SMEs, they're so cute.

What I read: August 2023

"The Absolute Book" by Elizabeth Knox. I got it for Christmas. It was delightful, even if maybe some stuff wasn't explained completely. Or maybe that's part of why it was delightful.  "Crucial conversations" By Joseph Grenny and three other old white men. Another office book club selection. The word "candor" comes up a lot. I really resented this book.  LHC #220: "The Goldfinch" by Donna Tartt. There was a girl at my previous company who wanted to have an office book club, and she had this book on her desk for months and months. I can totally understand this. I found portions crazy stressful to read. Like, I would be skipping ahead to see how much more in the section, could I get through it, pacing around, etc. I wanted to know how it ended, sure, but I was having weird stress dreams and stuff. If it wasn't a library book I might not have finished it at all. It was such a relief when Boris showed up again and something happened. I di

What I read: March, 2010

"The Man from St. Petersburg" Ken Follett. Oh. My. God. I read it because we had two copies lying around. Ick. This book made me feel dirty. I made some negative comment about this book to my sister, who repled "I've read every book he's ever written." I think she's mad at me now. This book was all tell, no show. There was no tension. The sex was funny. It reminded me of my dad's novel. It seemed well-researched, from what I can tell. When my friend said that of my karate-zombie novel, I took it as damning with faint praise, so there you go. There was no female character with whom I could identify. Or male character, for that matter. I don't need a woman to be a role model. I really strongly disliked this book. "Wanderlust" Rebecca Solnit. I'd come across her name in a discussion of the aftermath of the Haitian earthquake, and came across this when I was looking for her other book on the TPL website. As walking is an integral part o
